Hello Christopher

It is difficult to put into words just how much we appreciate all that you have done for us, from the first telephone contact, which was a general enquiry about chick availability and after scouring the internet for specific bird breeders, the search engine threw up parrotbreederuk.com and the rest as the saying goes is history.

I can honestly say that you provide the most complete experience for anyone who is wanting to bring a new baby bird into their home to become an integral part of their family life for many decades to come.

So after months of debating between a macaw and umbrella cockatoo I managed to find Chris website and funny enough he had a Electus available , best decision I could of made , from the first day of enquiring about her everyday none stop I had full updates in a sense of letting me know each stage she was at with feeding , handling to the point I’m getting around 10 photos a day , numerous photos which for me sold it to me straight away you could tell from the start he literally lives for the Electus that he raises , sent me loads of articles on the Electus all though I’ve had parrots in the pass the Electus is another level , due to how Chris raised my girl within the first few weeks I had she would recall to me instantly not flying but on the floor recalling to where I was in the room , without a doubt I would definitely buy from Chris again and will stay in contact while she’s being raised in her new family home , remember always go to a known breeder and if your after an Electus in particular no matter what mileage you will cover to collect her, you will 100% not be disappointed

As August 2024 was nearing an end and we had previously had no luck finding what we were looking for, you replied to my voicemail message. From that day onwards you kept me informed of the progress of the one egg your breeding pair had produced, you provided a timeline from egg to incubator and then to hatching. We had only one requirement and that was that we wanted a Hen and you explained that from the sounds of the newly born chick was making it sounds as though it would be a hen, no guarantee, but it was your opinion through experience. We were so excited when the feathers produced colours we were waiting so desperately for,  that you were proved correct and we had what we had exactly what we wanted.

You sent pictures regularly of progress and provided much needed information on Parrot books, weaning information, equipment for feeding and transport cages and general helpful information and tips. I followed up on all you advised us on and purchased the books and cage as recommended.

As the days and weeks passed by we were shown the progress of the baby bird we named Roja and it made the whole wait bearable as we were made to feel part of the whole process, I don’t think we could have received the same involvement from anyone else.

Saturday 10th November was the big day for us, it was the day we were collecting our baby girl Roja, we had a long journey from Whitehaven in West Cumbria and we were returning straight away the same day. I can honestly say it was worth every minute and every mile, you went through everything with us and provided us with some equipment and an Aviator harness as we requested, planning was meticulous and set us up for our return home later that same day.

When I first saw Roja, I thought she was so beautiful for such a baby bird, but looking at her parents it was plain to see why she was so stunning, her mother and father are such beautiful birds in colour and health and watched quietly as you gave us advice a few short feet away.

We had a long journey home, apart from the odd chatter from the back seat Roja was very quiet in her travel cage, when we did arrive home she was a little reactive that evening and we let her settle in after such a tumultuous day without too much fuss.

The following day she was far more receptive and it’s understandable after a long journey, two new faces and a new home, when the only person she had ever seen before was Christopher.

It is now day 5 of Roja in her new home as I write this letter and she is completely relaxed and happy, she has been handled with love and care from all my family members, her condition is amazing, her colours so vibrant, her nature is so loving. Everyone who has seen her says the same thing “What a beautiful girl”

We are looking forward to hearing her first words and in spring we will be taking her out and about in her harness to visit our family.

The photos and messages you sent me on her progress have been put into time folder that we will add to as she develops from a baby to an adult, they are priceless memories we will treasure always. I hope you enjoyed seeing the photos of her progress since she came home, in just a few short days she has become the main focus of our days, she shouts for us and replies when we talk to her, she has a wonderful character. Once she has all her flight feathers we will begin flight training and we have access to buildings for large indoor flight areas where she will be safe from the elements and predators. I will continue to send photos of her progress, so you can see the beautiful girl she has become.

I am so pleased we were able to get her from you Christopher, you did an amazing job rearing her and she is such a credit to you as a surrogate, if I know of anyone who is looking for a Grand Eclectus I will tell them to give you a call, they would be getting nothing but the best. It was a privilege to get to meet you and you have done exactly what you said you would in the timescale you gave us and we couldn’t have asked for more.

From Michael, Edith, Roja and all my family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts, please keep in touch. 😊

The eclectus is an unusual type of bird in the parrot family for its extreme sexual dimorphism of the colours of the plumage.  The male eclectus having a mostly bright emerald green plumage and the female a mostly bright red and purple/blue plumage.

The first European ornithologists to see eclectus parrots thought they were of two distinct species.

Eclectus parrots native to the Solomon Islands, Sumba, New Guinea & nearby islands, northeastern Australia, and the Maluku Islands. Some populations restricted to relatively small islands are comparably rare.

Eclectus Parrot Care

Introduction to Eclectus Parrots

Eclectus parrots are stunningly vibrant birds, renowned for their intelligence, affectionate nature, and unique talking abilities. Their striking colours – bright green for males and deep red and purple for females – make them one of the most visually captivating parrot species. Owning an Eclectus requires dedication and proper care to ensure their happiness and wellbeing.

House Requirements

Cage Size

Eclectus parrots need spacious cages to accommodate their active nature. A cage measuring at least 36 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 48 inches high with horizontal bars for climbing is ideal.

Ensure the bars are no more than 1 inch apart to prevent escape or injury.

Perches and Toys

Provide natural wood perches to maintain healthy feet.

Include a variety of toys (ropes, foraging puzzles, and chewable items) to stimulate their intelligent minds and prevent boredom.

Location

Place the cage in a bright, well-ventilated area, but away from direct sunlight, draughts, and kitchen fumes. Eclectus parrots thrive in social environments, so keep them in a room where they can interact with the family.

Diet and Nutrition

Eclectus parrots have unique dietary requirements due to their long digestive tract. A balanced, fresh, and varied diet is essential for their wellbeing.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Base their diet on fresh produce, such as:

Fruits: Papaya, mango, apple (seedless), banana, and pomegranate.

Vegetables: Carrots, broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, and courgette.

Avoid: Avocado, onion, garlic, and rhubarb, as they are toxic to parrots.

Pellets and Seeds

Offer high-quality parrot pellets as a supplementary food source.

Seeds should be given sparingly, as too many can lead to obesity.

Treats

Healthy treats like nuts (in moderation) and cooked grains (quinoa, brown rice) can be used for training and bonding.

Water

Provide clean, fresh water daily in a sturdy bowl to prevent spills.

Health and Hygiene

Regular Veterinary Check-ups

Schedule annual visits to an avian vet to ensure your Eclectus is in good health.

Grooming

Nail trimming: Regularly trim their nails or provide rough perches for natural wear.

Bathing: Eclectus parrots love water. Offer a shallow dish for bathing or lightly mist them with water 2-3 times a week.

Signs of Illness

Watch for symptoms such as lethargy, changes in eating habits, or abnormal droppings. Early detection is crucial for treatment.

Socialisation and Interaction

Daily Interaction

Eclectus parrots are highly social and require at least 1-2 hours of interaction daily to stay emotionally healthy.

Activities can include talking, training, or simply spending time near them.

Talking and Training

They are exceptional mimics and can learn a variety of words and phrases. Use positive reinforcement during training sessions.

Avoiding Stress

Sudden changes in environment, loud noises, or lack of interaction can stress Eclectus parrots. A consistent routine helps them feel secure.

Common Behavioural Traits

Vocalisations

Eclectus parrots are not as noisy as other parrots but do have loud calls. They vocalise most when seeking attention or during specific times of the day.

Chewing

Their natural instinct to chew can be satisfied with safe wooden toys or untreated wood branches.

Moulting

Eclectus parrots moult their feathers periodically. Ensure a nutritious diet during this time to support feather regrowth.

Certain woods and plants are harmful to Eclectus parrots. Avoid using the following for perches, toys, or anywhere near your bird:

Toxic woods: Oak, Yew, Cedar, Pine (untreated or sap-laden), and Cherry.

Toxic plants: Oleander, Philodendron, Foxglove, Daffodils, and Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane).

Always research plants and woods before bringing them into your home, as some can cause severe illness or death in parrots.

Non-Toxic Woods & Plants

The following are safe for your Eclectus parrot and can be used for toys, perches, and general enrichment:

Non-toxic woods: Apple, Maple, Willow, Ash, and Birch.

Non-toxic plants: Spider Plant, Bamboo, African Violet, Herbs (Basil, Parsley, Mint), and Areca Palm.

Ensure any wood is free from pesticides, varnish, or chemicals, and always clean and dry it thoroughly before use.

Unsafe Foods

Certain foods can be toxic or harmful to Eclectus parrots and must never be included in their diet:

Avocado: Highly toxic and can cause heart failure.

Chocolate: Contains theobromine, which is fatal to birds.

Caffeine: Found in tea, coffee, and energy drinks; can cause heart issues.

Alcohol: Even in small amounts, it is highly toxic to birds.

Onion and Garlic: Can damage red blood cells and lead to anaemia.

Salt and Sugary Foods: Cause dehydration and other health problems.

Safe Foods

Eclectus parrots thrive on fresh, nutrient-rich foods. Ensure their diet includes:

Fruits: Mango, Papaya, Pomegranate, Blueberries, and Kiwi.

Vegetables: Carrots, Broccoli, Spinach, Sweetcorn, and Peppers.

Grains: Cooked brown rice, Quinoa, and Barley.

Protein: Cooked egg (occasionally), and sprouted seeds.

Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly to remove pesticides, and cut them into manageable pieces to avoid choking hazards.

Do’s

Provide Fresh Food Daily: Eclectus parrots require a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to meet their nutritional needs.

Offer Enrichment: Rotate toys regularly and provide natural branches for chewing and climbing.

Maintain a Routine: Eclectus parrots thrive on a consistent feeding and interaction schedule.

Keep Their Cage Clean: Remove leftover food and clean the cage daily to prevent bacteria and mould growth.

Monitor Their Behaviour: Pay attention to changes in mood, appetite, or droppings – these can indicate health issues.

Don’ts

Avoid Toxic Foods and Items: Never feed them harmful foods or expose them to toxic plants or woods.

Don’t Smoke Near Your Bird: Cigarette smoke and vapours are highly toxic to parrots.

Don’t Use Non-Stick Cookware: Overheated non-stick coatings release fumes that are deadly to birds.

Don’t Neglect Socialisation: Eclectus parrots are highly social and need daily interaction with their owner.

Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes: Keep their environment stable and free from draughts.

Common Signs of Illness

Fluffed feathers or lethargy.

Change in droppings or appetite.

Breathing difficulties or sneezing.

Seek an avian vet immediately if any of these symptoms occur.

First Aid for Injuries

Bleeding: Apply cornstarch or a styptic powder to minor wounds, but avoid cutting into the quick of their nails or feathers.

Broken Blood Feather: Carefully remove the feather with tweezers and apply pressure to stop bleeding.

Always follow up with a vet after administering first aid.

Household Dangers

Eclectus parrots are curious and can get into trouble if not supervised. Protect your bird from these common household hazards:

Toxic Fumes: Avoid using aerosols, cleaning sprays, or non-stick cookware near your parrot.

Open Windows and Fans: Ensure windows are secured with screens and ceiling fans are turned off when your bird is out.

Electrical Cords: Keep cords out of reach or covered to prevent chewing.

Small Objects: Remove items like jewellery, coins, and buttons that could be swallowed.

Water Sources: Close toilet lids and cover open water containers like sinks and bathtubs to prevent drowning.
